Surroundings

Schlachtensee

Just behind the house lies lake Schlachtensee, which CNN has named one of the world´s best swimming places. In summer, it is also ideal for stand-up paddleboarding. Paddleboards can be hired directly opposite, and rowing boats can be hired at the traditional hire point at Schlachtensee S-Bahn station - Bring your passport as a pledge! All year round, you can go for a walk, jog or enjoy the surroundings in the beer garden and restaurant "Alte Fischerhütte" by the lake.

Grunewald

Grunewald forest borders directly on lake Schlachtensee and stretches West for kilometres to lake Wannsee with its famous bathing beach "Strandbad Wannsee" and North to the Olympic Stadium in the borough of Charlottenburg. Lake Wannsee and the adjoining Havel river are ideal for boat trips ("Dampferfahrt") and many leisure activities. Grunewald forest offers many other experiences with additional lakes, such as the nearby Krumme Lanke, nature trails, the Grunewald Tower lookout "Grunewaldturm", "Jagdschloss Grunewald" (the Grunewald hunting lodge) and the forest silence, which you can still experience even on busy weekends if you leave the main paths and lakes behind. In addition to long walks, a bike tour is also a great option.

Architecture

Almost the entire region from Mexikoplatz to Wannsee was developed with villas and mansions in the early 1900s. Take a walk through the dreamy cobbled streets and enjoy the special flair of our old houses. Breisgauer Straße, the centre of the Schlachtensee district, offers many small shops, supermarkets and places to stop for refreshments. But ‘modernism’ has also left its mark here. Behind Krumme Lanke begins Bruno Taut`s so-called Papageiensiedlung (Parrot Estate). The Berlin list of historical monuments "Denkmalliste" also mentions several buildings by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in our neighbourhood. Further information is available from Haus am Waldsee.

History of our House

Built in 1897 as a weekend cottage (‘gardener´s cottage’) for Otto Junghann, director of a steelworks in Silesia, our house underwent numerous renovations and extensions in the following years. Most recently, we added a second staircase and renovated the dilapidated shower room on the upper floor in a country house style, based on the original. This is how we created the guest room and guest bathroom, which we are now proud and delighted to offer you. The house, including several extensions and renovations, was built by Wolgaster Holzbau AG, a former shipyard with its own forest in the USA, from which high-quality woods (American yellow pine) were imported. When wood was no longer in demand for shipbuilding, Wolgaster Holzbau AG became the first supplier of prefabricated houses, which were in demand worldwide. A regional example is the emperors´ train station ("Kaiserbahnhof") in the former royal hunting grounds in Joachimsthal in the Schorfheide, North of Berlin. Many other Wolgaster wooden houses can be found along the Baltic Sea coast, such as the youth hostel in Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom. Feel free to ask us for documentation on the history of the house and Wolgaster Holzbau AG, if you are interested!

Ecology and Climate Protection

In the front garden, you can admire our wildflower meadow. In addition to ornamental plants and a classic lawn, our garden has space for wild fruit and native shrubs and trees, making an important contribution to urban ecology.

Our house has undergone comprehensive energy-efficient renovation and is heated by a geothermal heat pump. As soon as the sun shines, your hot water comes from our solar system.
